Rangers aren’t doing Brennan Othmann — or themselves — any favors
These may not be the most pressing issues the Rangers are confronting in their playoff scenario that has reached the dire-straits mode, but in their own ways are reflective of the way the organization has done business for a very long time.
Brennan Othmann was selected 16th-overall selection in the 2021 draft because of his offensive capability. He was not drafted to be Bob Gainey. The winger, who could play with an obnoxious edge at times, scored 50 goals in 66 games for OHL Flint in his 18/19 age season the season following the draft.
Do we need to go through the list of Rangers’ first-round selections at forward since 2017? Do we need to bring up Lias Andersson, do we need to bring up Vitali Kravtsov, do we need to bring up Kaapo Kakko? Do we need to recite the litany of disappointment?
Othmann has come through the system. Maybe slowly. Maybe not, because you just never quite know. He’s had a couple of impressive training camps and was the last cut or two each of the last two camps.
