We’re a hat trick away from history.
At the time of publication, Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin is two goals shy of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goal record. As of now, the 39-year-old left wing has 892 scores under his belt; “the Great One” ended his career with 894.
And, based on our findings, it’s likely the record will be broken sooner rather than later. In Ovechkin’s past five games alone, he’s maintained a breakneck pace, notching four goals.
Not bad for a 39-year-old guy who fractured his left fibula in November, forcing him to sit out 16 games.
If you want to see Ovi make hockey history live IRL — along with Gretzky who has been attending every one of Ovechkin’s games leading up to goal no. 895 — you can catch him and the Caps next at their home Capital One Arena for a contest against the visiting Chicago Blackhawks on Friday, April 4.
After that, the division-leading, D.C.-based club returns to the road for a matchup with the New York Islanders at Long Island’s UBS Arena on Sunday, April 6.
Following those two showdowns, “The Great 8” and the Capitals have five regular season games remaining before the playoffs begin.
Will he score from his usual left circle spot? Which goalie is going to let the historic puck in the net?
While we don’t know the answers to these questions just yet, we do know the best way to find out is live.
As of now, the lowest price we could find on tickets for any one of these final seven games was $52 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Alexander Ovechkin history
The Russian icon was selected with the first overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft after playing a few seasons with the Russian Superleague’s Dynamo Moscow.
Over the course of his storied career — all with the Capitals where he won one Stanley Cup in 2018 — he’s led the NHL in scoring a record nine times; in 13 seasons, he’s netted 40 or more goals, which is also a record for the sport.
In fact, it’s actually likely he would have already secured the NHL’s all-time leading scorer title if not for the 2004-05 and 2012-13 lockouts as well as the 2020 bubble season. If anything, these setbacks have made his achievements all the more impressive.
Most interestingly of all though, is how similar his career has shaken out in comparison to Gretzky’s.
“Ovechkin has 892 goals in 1,485 games during his 20 NHL seasons, all with Washington,” the NHL reported. “Gretzky scored 894 goals in 1,487 NHL regular-season games during 20 seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers before retiring in 1999.”
Outside of his vaunted run as a professional athlete, Ovechkin has supported Vladimir Putin in presidential elections.
“I just support my country, you know?” he said. “That’s where I’m from, my parents live there, all my friends. Like every human from different countries, they support their president. It’s not about political stuff.”
When asked about his relationship with Putin, who sent him a wedding gift, Ovi remarked “we talk about hockey and all that stuff. That’s it.”
Following the invasion of Ukraine, Ovechkin made a call for peace without naming either country.
