Paul Skenes expects his Pirates teammates to have a field day over his buzzy GQ photoshoot with girlfriend Olivia “Livvy” Dunne.
The reigning NL Rookie of the Year, who posed alongside the star LSU gymnast and their dog Roux as part of a feature published Wednesday, spoke about the reception he anticipated from the locker room after Pittsburgh’s 4-2 win over the Rays that same day.
“It’s uh, I’m gonna get some flak in the locker room, I know that and I’m not looking forward to that,” Skenes said with a smile, as captured by CBS Sports.
“Yeah, I didn’t know what GQ was until the offer came so glad I did it, I think. How’d I look?”
Skenes posed in designer threads by Coach and Dolce & Gabbana in the profile with Dunne, almost two years after the couple went public with their relationship.
A social media sensation, Dunne boasts more than 13 million followers across TikTok and Instagram, where she has shared peeks at her private life with Skenes.
“She’s been dealing with all the notoriety and all that longer than I have,” the MLB ace said. “I view it as, it’s not my job to take pictures with these people, it’s my job to throw, and them wanting to take pictures is getting in the way of that.”
Even though Skenes and Dunne, both 22, have different approaches to social media, he’s impressed by how the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model handles the public space with grace.
“She always handles everything very well — she’s very comfortable to be around for other people who come up and ask to talk, that kind of thing,” Skenes said.
Dunne, in her fifth and final season with the Lady Tigers, has been cheering on her teammates as LSU looks to repeat as NCAA champions.
The New Jersey native revealed in March she had been dealing with a knee injury, which kept her out of the lineup as the regular-season concluded.
Dunne celebrated LSU’s SEC Championship title later that month, posting on Instagram, “ring SECured.”
She has also been supporting Skenes as his second MLB season gets underway.
He’s posted a 1.46 ERA through two starts.
