The New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers will renew their rivalry in a pivotal game at the Prudential Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers are the more desperate of the two teams, needing to keep pace with the Montreal Canadiens in the race for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Devils are safely in a playoff spot, but they’ll want to make it official and avoid any late-season drama. A loss on Saturday afternoon would pull the Blueshirts within six points of the Devils with a game in hand.
New Jersey is a -120 favorite for Saturday’s matinee matchup in Newark.

Rangers vs. Devils betting preview
For the first half of the season, it looked like the Devils were going to contend for the Metropolitan Division title.
New Jersey went 28-17-6 through its first 41 games, putting it on pace for 124 points.
For a myriad of reasons, the Devils fell off the boil over their next 25 games – going 12-12-1 and posting a -2 goal difference.
Betting on the NHL?
Injuries to Jack Hughes and Dougie Hamilton played a big role in New Jersey’s demise, but the Devils were struggling before Hughes and Hamilton went down.
The Rangers also have endured a long stretch of mediocrity, though theirs started much earlier than the Devils’. The Blueshirts are 24-28-6 over their last 56 games and are still in the playoff hunt only because of their white-hot start to the campaign.
Rangers vs. Devils pick
The Rangers have stayed in the race thanks to a 3-1-1 stretch over their last five games, but things still look far from convincing.

Their last three games were a messy 5-4 overtime win against the Wild, an unfussy win over the last-place Sharks, and an inexcusable OT loss against the Ducks, who erased a two-goal deficit late in the third period.
That said, they are taking on a flawed opponent that has been trading wins and losses for months.
It’s hard to trust either one of these teams to put together a tidy, structured game right now, and that should lead to a back-and-forth tilt that could combust at any moment.
The Pick: Over 5.5 goals scored (-110, BetMGM Sportsbook)
